Tomas Threatens Haiti

Currently, Tropical Storm Tomas is located 280 miles southwest of Port au Prince.  As the storm begins to turn northeast, in the direction of Haiti, it's 50 mph winds will strengthen and become more organized.  It could potentially impact already damaged Haiti as a very strong tropical storm as it attempts to regain hurricane force.  There are still thousands of Haitians living in emergency camps set up after the January 12 earthquake this year and United Nations warned that possibly 1.5 million people could be at risk.  Torrential rains could trigger flash floods throughout southwest Haiti including the Port au Prince area.  Other places at risk from Tomas over the next several days are the Southeast Bahamas, East Jamaica, East Cuba, and the Turks and Caicos.

  1. I feel horrible for the people who are currently living in Haiti. There was barely anytime to recuperate from the earthquake and now a tropical storm is hitting them. Hopefully the damage wont be tragic.

  2. The island of Haiti has been the center of attention for natural disasters for a while now. Not so long ago, the worst phenomenon occurred in Haiti, an Earthquake. This earthquake left the island in mass destruction and devastated the people and the land. I remember thousands of people got killed and this was the top new for like a month. People fled the country, children were being kidnapped and then sold, there were bodies that were never found, and people were starving becuase the supplies didn't get there fast enouhg, and if they did they wasn't sufficient food for the starving multitude of paupers. Anyways what I am trying to say is that the people of this island have suffered so much, that it's just not fair that these people have to keep on suffering due to natural disasters. I just hope that this storm doesn't gain more strenght, becuase if it does, who knows what's going to happen to these people. I don't think

  3. When I first heard about this on the news I was in shock. I could not believe that yet another strong natural disaster was threatening Haiti. I can not imagine how terrified some of the residents must have been when they heard the news. I hope that not a ton of damage was done to them and that they can stay strong through this. I think that these people won't have to suffer from any more natural disasters any time soon.

  4. I feel horrible for everyone living there, and have already sent two packs of old clothes for the needy there. In my team, I have three haitians that came here after the last disaster. One of them is living here by himself, and often tells me how everything is there. I hope the damage will be kept to a minimal, as they have no protection.
