France Bans Full Veils in Public

This Tuesday, September 14, French parliament was the first European nation to ban full-face veils, or burqas.  The Senate passed the bill with an overwhelming majority of 246 votes in favor and only a single vote against the new law.  Enforcement of this regulation will begin as early as the beginning of next year unless it is overturned by senior judges.

One would think that this law was created for security purposes, but the reason is that the French believe it is against women's rights.  “This is not about security or religion, but respecting our republican principles,” Justice Minister Michele Alliot-Marie stated before she put in her vote.  Women who are caught disobeying the law will receive anything from a fine of around $200, citizenship lessons, or a single term in jail.  The bulk of European countries are supportive of this new bill and nations such as Belgium, Spain, and Italy have already began to establish laws of their own that deal with this subject.  Though many countries agree, people like President Barack Obama claim its an insult to all Muslims.

  1. I think it is absurd to excuse the merit of this new law by claiming that it supports women’s rights. By exercising it they manage quite the contrary, is their right to follow whatever religion they want to follow, or wear whatever attire they please. Nevertheless, I do find this law to be valid. It promotes security, and makes people feel safer within the community. Imagine a place where everyone goes around wearing a mask, major chaos would arise; crime will increase since the villains would be irreconcilable (This is perfectly displayed in the movie V for Vendetta. Imagines if V would have been unjust and had bad intentions)

  2. They're just being racist. Ever since I heard about how the French treat the Maghrebs I've lost respect for them.
