The Largest Offshore Wind Farm

In the island nation of Britain, the largest offshore wind farm in the entire world began producing three hundred megawatts of power this Thursday.  This massive area has an area of twenty-two square miles and consists of one hundred, forty-foot tall turbines.  The blades on these gigantic turbines are sixty-five feet in length and each turbine is spread out in a distance no closer than 1,600 feet from one another.  Within four years, this enormous farm will quadruple in size as it adds about 341 new turbines.  With this grand opening, Britain has truly begun a race for more eco-friendly sources of energy on our plant.  England now owns more offshore wind capacity then the rest of the world combined!  Currently, Britain's overall energy is fueled with 3% of its electricity coming from renewable sources.  In 2020, their goal is to bring that minor 3% to a huge fraction of 20%, by the addition of multiple new wind farms.  These farms really have no harmful environmental effects and are required to stay out of bird migratory courses.  This first step by England will hopefully persuade other energy companies to follow the path of eco-friendly sources.  Engineers, consultants, and oilrig makers all over the world have already begun to create a steady foundation in this growing industry.

  1. It amazes me that Britain owns these large wind turbines, and that soon they will have almost 400 of them within the next several years. Wind farms are obviously more of an eco-friendly way to obtain energy, and hopefully much of the rest of the world will follow in Britain's footsteps. Unfortunately, the majority of the resources used in the world are nonrenewable, and this is negatively affecting the world's environmental conditions today. I believe that other countries should consider wind turbines as an alternative energy source, in order to conserve energy needed in the near future.

  2. I agree with Emily, and I also had never knew that wind turbines can be placed in water. I used to live in California and they had numerous wind turbines where I lived as well as at my cottage in Ontario. I never really thought about other countries using these as well. I do think it is a good idea because it is renewable. I like this blog because it really helps us catch up on what is happening in the world if we do not have time to read the news or watch them.
